St John the Baptist Church, Whitwick is a vibrant and growing part of the local community and actively involved in meeting the needs of all ages. The original church on the site is believed to be Anglo-Saxon with the current tower dating back to 1220. The church is the historic centre of the village and one of the oldest in the National Forest.
The planned restoration concerns the main roof, tower, electrical system and redecoration. An English Heritage grant of £145,000 has been promised for 75% of the roof and tower repairs with the condition that we raise the remaining £50,000 and complete the work by the end of 2008.
The development involves introduction of toilets, a creche and refreshment facilities which will support the wider community use of the building.
The first phase commenced in March 2007 and was completed at the end of the year. Phase two is now underway with the scaffolding going up on July 21st 2008. The final phase is planned to flood light the building to celebrate the historic origins of Whitwick and enhance security.

Phase 1 Building of toilets and renewal of
electical system. £ 110,000
Phase 2 Restoration of tower parapet and
renewal of lead roof. £ 194,000
Phase 3 Reordering, including installation of creche
and servery, redecoration & floodlighting. £ 60,000 est
