WW1 Centenary - Knitted Poppies

As part of the end of the World War One Centenary Remembrance Event in November, we are proposing to produce displays made up of knitted poppies at our churches. Copies of the pattern are available in our churches or click on the poppy pattern link below. We're also encouraging those who can't knit to get involved in other creative ways of making poppies.

Please drop your contributions off at one of the three churches at a Sunday Service or at St John the Baptist, Whitwick on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings 10.30am-12.30pm, or St Andrew's Thringstone on Thursday mornings 10.00am-11.15am.

Thank You

These Names are Lamps of Sacrifice Exhibition                                             Over the past months, local heritage groups, young people and volunteers have been working with heritage experts to document the history of Coalville's Memorial Clock Tower and other war memorials in the local area. These names are Lamps of Sacrifice is a touring exhibition describing the history of Coalville's Memorial Clock Tower, which was created after the First World War (WW1) to commemorate the town's servicemen who paid the ultimate sacrifice for King and country. The exhibition, which was commissioned by North West Leicestershire District Council to coincide with the centenary of WW1, provides insights into how the Clock Tower was funded, who built it and the unveiling ceremony. It also gives a snapshot of the many other war memorials and war graves in Coalville and surrounding villages including Whitwick, Thringstone and Swannington, to commemorate those who fell in the 'Great War'. Hear memories of the Clock Tower, see historic images and read about how Coalville and its locality commemorated their soldiers.
